UXBRIDGE - Every day in Uxbridge, ordinary people are making an extraordinary difference. Their names and faces might not be instantly recognizable to everyone, but they are the residents whose tireless efforts or courage make this municipality a better place to live, work and play. And we want to hear all about them. Once again, the Times-Journal is seeking nominations for its 'Citizen of the Year' award, to be presented by Mayor Bob Shepherd during Canada Day celebrations July 1.
"This is an opportunity for the community to applaud those special people whose efforts have made a big difference to others," says Times-Journal News Editor Judi Bobbitt. "We know there are many individuals in Uxbridge deserving of this award, and we want the community to tell us who they are."
Nominees must live within the Township of Uxbridge. They may be nominated for any number of noteworthy deeds, including volunteer work, international aid or relief efforts, local fundraising projects, or worthwhile community service endeavours. They might have overcome physical or physiological handicaps to match or exceed their fellows, or performed acts of heroism. There is no age restriction.
Previous winners include conservationist Brian Buckles in 2007, whose accomplishments with 'Uxbridge Naturally' helped establish a trail system in Uxbridge; and long-time community volunteer Shirley Vance in 2006, who gives her time to various organizations including the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Auxiliary store 'Chances Are'.
Nomination forms for the Times-Journal Citizen of the Year 2008 are available at our office, 16 Bascom St., during regular business hours. A form can also be downloaded in pdf format from our website www.newsdurhamregion.com, under the Uxbridge news section. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, June 13.
