UXBRIDGE - Residents of Uxbridge will once again have an opportunity to show their support for Canadian troops. On Saturday, May 31, starting at 11:30 a.m., a 'Durham Support Our Troops Rally' will take place in Bowmanville at Clarington Fields, 2375 Baseline Rd. W. The event is hosted by Durham MP Bev Oda and the Royal Canadian Legion branches in Uxbridge, Port Perry and Bowmanville. "Durham is extremely proud of our Canadian troops who serve to protect our country and people around the world," said Ms. Oda. "On May 31, I encourage all residents from Durham and beyond to join us and show their support for the men and women in the Canadian Forces." Uxbridge Legion president Jack Ballinger said Uxbridge residents can register to board a bus from the Legion on Franklin Street to the event that day, departing around 10 a.m. and returning at 4 p.m. Those interested should call 905-852-5293. There will be space for about 15 people, he noted. The day will feature a barbecue, music, military speakers, displays, and bands. Gary Laing of the Uxbridge Legion said the Uxbridge Legion's pipes and drums band will be attending. Mr. Laing also noted, "Any of the public who wants to go should wear red." Those attending are also advised to take a lawn chair to the outdoor event. A 'Repatriation Memorial Drive' from Trenton to Toronto on the 'Highway of Heroes' will also take place and can be viewed from Clarington Fields. "Clarington is home to the Highway of Heroes and hosting this rally at Clarington Fields means that people from across Durham will be able to show their support for the troops in a very meaningful way," said John Johnson, public relations officer for the Bowmanville Legion. Participants in the rally include The Ontario Regiment RCAC, local cadet units, the Clarington Concert Band, former residents of Afghanistan and more. Uxbridge had its own 'Support Our Troops' day in April, 2007. More information about the upcoming Durham rally is available online at www.durhamsupportsourtroops.com. Or, call 1-866-436-1141.
