Resident fed up with 'Support our Troops' rallies
Wed May 14, 2008
To the editor: Today I received an invitation from our MP, Bev Oda, to attend the "Durham Support our Troops" rally at the end of the month. I am officially fed up with this constant exhortation to support our troops -- whatever that means. I do support them, I pay taxes for them, don't I? I really fail to understand what these rallies are in aid of. If they are to show public support for the Afghanistan mission, then have the bravery (as do our soldiers) to come out and say so. Personally, I have no issues with our involvement in Afghanistan but I feel it is ultimately a waste of time as any leader from Alexander the Great onwards would tell you. It's what's closer to home that annoys me. By not saying what these rallies are really advocating, the government and its elected officials can continue to use our money for these things and claim that they are not political in nature. Maybe you can fool all the people all the time.Laurence CutnerCourtice
