OSHAWA – Brad Selwood has been fired by the Oshawa Generals.
Co-owner John Davies delivered the news this afternoon during the annual post-season meeting between he and Selwood, the club’s general manager and vice president.
Davies hired Selwood shortly after he bought the team from John Humphreys in 2004.
The team finished in last place in Selwood’s first season as GM, made the playoffs two years later and reached the Ontario Hockey League semifinals this season, losing out in five games to the Belleville Bulls.
“I have nothing other than great memories and I thank John for the opportunity,” said Selwood, who had two years remaining on his contract. “I think we put a pretty good organization together there. It’s part of the hockey business. I have no axes to grind with anyone.”
Davies and Selwood have a long-standing relationship that dates back well before their OHL experience together.
Davies said he needed a couple of hours to compose himself before the meeting, and called it the most difficult day of his hockey life.
But, he and co-owner Rocco Tullio believe they need a new person in charge to take the hockey team to the next level.
“The organization has come a long way in four years and we’re going to continue to find a way to get better, a perennial contending team,” Davies said.
Davies said head coach Chris DePiero will stay on and the search for a new GM will begin immediately.
