Plea expected in case of teacher charged with child sex assault

OSHAWA -- A plea is expected today in the case of Jeremy Pike, a former Oshawa school teacher facing dozens of charges relating to child sexual abuse.

Detectives, lawyers and family members of victims gathered at an Oshawa courthouse Friday morning expecting proceedings to begin but were told there would be a delay as the defendant had not yet been transported from his cell at the Metro East Detention Centre, where he's spent much of the past two and a half years.

Mr. Pike, 35, of Bowmanville, was arrested in the summer of 2005 on allegations of sexually molesting a child. An ongoing investigation by Durham police has led to dozens more charges being laid, including sexual assault, making child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Mr. Pike was a Grade 5 teacher at Glen Street Public School in Oshawa at the time of his arrest. He has been in custody since first being charged.
