OSHAWA -- Chalk up another one for a local General Motors plant.

The local plant was presented with another J.D. Power and Associates award on Friday morning.

GM’s Oshawa Car Plant was presented with the “Founder’s Award” in recognition of commitment to quality and industry leading performance.

“The Founder’s Award recognizes the hard work and dedication of our employees and our consistent commitment to building the best quality cars for our customers,” said Dan Hermer, of the Oshawa car plant. “This recognition comes at a pivotal time as we apply our long history of manufacturing excellence and quality leadership to building the highly anticipated Chevrolet Camaro.”

Local union leaders were on hand for the presentations.

“I want to congratulate the men and women of this facility for once again winning another prestigious award such as J.D. Power,” said Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 president Chris Buckley, who pointed out the full trophy shelf at the award presentation.

But awards do not make local workers feel more secure in their jobs in a shaky manufacturing industry, Mr. Buckley said.

Global quality vice-president Jamie Hresko thanked workers who watched the presentation on their break for all they do to help GM in the tough environment the auto industry is now facing.

“It is an absolute pleasure to be here today and now for something good, for a change,” Mr. Hresko said. “I think if you look at the trophy case and you really understand the statistics of what Oshawa’s done over the past few years, you should all be very proud of yourselves for the processes, systems and people systems you’ve put in place over the past few years that have enabled you to be the best.”

The Founder’s Award is a discretionary award presented by J.D. Power and Associates, recognizing individuals or companies that demonstrate dedication, commitment and sustained improvement in serving customers. In the 40-year history of J.D. Power and Associates, 22 companies or individuals have previously received the award.
