TORONTO -- It's safe to assume the Oshawa Hawkeyes will have to play a whole lot better if they hope to continue along in the Northern Football Conference playoffs. After scoring a late touchdown to rescue an ugly 7-1 road win over the Toronto Maddogs Saturday, the Hawkeyes have advanced to the semifinals Saturday against the Tri City Outlaws, who were a perfect 7-0 during the regular season and are coming off a 63-0 thrashing of Sarnia in the quarterfinals. In the first half of Oshawa's quarterfinal, the Hawkeyes controlled field position as quarterback Jeremy Mussche and the offence moved the ball well enough, but costly turnovers, three coming while in scoring position, left the game scoreless at the half. In the second half, with Chris Foster in at quarterback, the Hawkeyes struggled to move the ball and neither team could get into scoring position until late in the game. With only 1:40 to go in a scoreless tie, the Maddogs finally got the ball deep, but decided to play it safe and instead of going for the a field goal, punted a single point to take a 1-0 lead. But Foster finally got things rolling with a completion to Dave Beaulieu and a perfect 49 yard strike to Gifford Rose for a touchdown with 52 seconds remaining to give the Hawkeyes a 7-1 lead. Brian Hinds intercepted a Maddog pass with 12 seconds to put the game on ice. Oshawa will meet the Outlaws at Centennial Stadium in Kitchener Saturday at 7 p.m. Tri City defeated Oshawa 28-8 during the regular season.
