Down 2-0 in their Senior B Lacrosse League final to the Owen Sound Woodsmen, the Merchants will need a victory at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena just to keep their season alive, and with that hopes of a trip to Sherwood Park, Alberta for the 2008 Presidents Cup.
In Game 1 at home, a dreadful second period placed the Merchants in a hole which they couldn't get out of in a 10-5 loss. Tied 2-2 after 20 minutes, a six-goal Owen Sound outburst in the second paved the way to victory. Brooklin goals were scored by Marc Burton, Richard Haan, Matt Savoie, Dan Ransom and Scott Fitchett, while Rick McCullough handled the goaltending duties.
In Owen Sound for Game 2, a similar story played out in that the Merchants again allowed 10 goals against and lost by a 10-6 count.
They scored two goals in each period, but trailed 6-4 after two and were outscored 4-2 in the final stanza. Goals were provided by James Barton and Haan with two each, and singles from Julian Matamoros and Steve Youngman.
If the Merchants can pull out a victory Thursday, Game 4 of the series will go Friday at Owen Sound, while a potential Game 5 is slated for Sunday at Luther Vipond (7 p.m.).
