The event is part of Play On!, a series of hockey tournaments taking place in cities throughout Canada, presented by CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
Play On! Oshawa will feature 21 rinks and is expected to attract 1,000 to 1,300 participants and 6,000 people in total over the course of the weekend.
The event will feature recreational and competitive street-hockey divisions for both genders and all ages, including separate divisions for girls and boys and an age 35-plus "legends" division.
Winners and finalists in the Elite division will progress to the Play On! national championships slated for February 2009.
Teams must be comprised of no fewer than four players and no more than seven players.
Interested teams can register for the tournament online at www.playon.ca before midnight Aug. 6.
To facilitate the event, certain roads in downtown Oshawa will be closed Friday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. and will remain closed during tournament play on Saturday and Sunday, re-opening at 8 p.m. Sunday night.
The affected roads are:
- King Street from Centre Street to Simcoe Street
- King Street from Simcoe Street to Mary Street
- Ontario Street from King Street to Bond Street
- Victoria Street from King Street to Bond Street
- Celina Street from King Street to Athol Street and Athol Street to Bruce Street
- Albert Street from King Street to Athol Street
Residential and commercial locations in the area will still be accessible via foot traffic.
