Scene It!: Lights, Camera, Action!

On Nov. 12, I attended an event that introduced Scene It! to the media.

The popular DVD board game was making its debut on the XBOX-360. The event let us media types sit down and experience first-hand what Scene It! was bringing to the console.

The game features the same style of play as the DVD version. Questions regarding movies are asked through an interface on a TV. The questions are often accompanied by a video clip, pictures, or an audio file that provides hints. The questions might be simple (In Wizard of Oz, what was Dorothy’s dog’s name?) or obscure (What Oscar-winning actor turned down the role of Han Solo in 1976?).

The 360 version is built from the ground up to be a party game. It ships with four wireless units that players can select their answers on or can use to buzz in on timed rounds. The game keeps score and is fast paced, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the game instead of monitoring a little plastic doohickey’s progress around a game board.

At its core, the game is pretty simplistic. You read a question, select your answer, and wait for the next round. That isn’t to say that the game isn’t fun to play. With over 1,800 questions the game could see a lot of play before repeat questions show up. The different ways in which questions are presented make for an interesting game that anyone could enjoy playing.

Could I recommend this as a single-person purchase? No, not unless you are a movie trivia machine who needs your fix NOW! This game is an excellent purchase for people who entertain at their homes or have kids. This game is fun, competitive, and could easily liven up a party!

About Rob Michael: While playing the game, Rob slyly let the other journalists think that they were winning... that is, right up until the moment he pulled ahead, won the game, and then spent 20 minutes laughing in their faces!
