UXBRIDGE -- Heightened security requirements for youth concerts at the Music Hall are being considered following damage during an event in December.

Uxbridge's parks and recreation committee on March 3 considered a report from Ingrid Svelnis, chief administrative officer, to increase the number of adults required to supervise an event at the Main Street South landmark from four to six. Ms. Svelnis noted at a concert to raise money for a proposed youth centre in Uxbridge on Dec. 15, "a section of the wall in the lower lobby near the stairwell was damaged. This facility has experienced damage in the past as a result of this type of function."

She said currently, two Durham police officers also attend youth concerts, a requirement that is not being considered for change.

The adults patrolling the youth concerts would have to be 30 years of age or more, if the proposal is adopted by council. But councillors during a March 3 meeting argued the age requirements are too high. But Ms. Svelnis offered, "It's difficult for teens to manage a teen function."

At the same meeting, Coun. Gordon Highet also proposed raising the damage deposit for all Music Hall events. Karen Ryl, who handles facility bookings, said that amount is currently $600 for regular events and $700 for production contracts.

Ms. Svelnis said the cost of the most recent damage was covered by the deposit, but commented, "Today it's a hole in the drywall, what will it be tomorrow?"
