WHITBY – In an attempt to combat an outbreak of counterfeit money, Durham police are hosting an information centre Tuesday to help people recognize bad bills.
According to Durham Regional Police, there has been a rash of
counterfeit $100 bills passed at a variety of businesses in the region
One such incident has landed a 21-year-old man before the courts.
He is facing fraud-related charges after allegedly attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at two Whitby businesses last week.
.Miguel Ballesteros of Chipstead Ave. in Brampton is charged with two counts of attempt fraud under $5,000, two counts of possession of counterfeit currency and two counts of utter counterfeit money.
Durham police, in partnership with the Bank of Canada, are hosting the information session on counterfeit money Tuesday. To pre-register call the Bank of Canada toll free education line at 1-888-513-8212.
The session will be on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. inside the 18 Division Community Room, at 480 Taunton Rd. E. in Whitby.
