OSHAWA -- Police converged on a south Oshawa neighbourhood Monday night in response to what's being described as a home invasion and shooting.

Durham officers were still combing boulevards and driveways on Birchcliffe Court north of Lakeview Park Avenue Tuesday morning, while a forensic identification van sat nearby. Police tape lined a driveway at one home on the east side of Birchcliffe Drive and several cruisers were on scene.

Cops armed with cameras and a metal detector gathered evidence while across the street, residents of a townhouse complex looked on. Residents said police converged on the neighbourhood at about 10 p.m. and proceeded to shut the area down as officers fanned out in search of suspects.

Police said one man had sustained a gunshot wound in an incident described as a home invasion. The man sustained minor injuries.

Durham's robbery unit is handling the investigation.

Police said there are "multiple" suspects and that several people were at the targeted home when the shooting occurred.

Residents described hearing gunfire before cops converged on their neighbourhood, a mix of townhouses and single-family homes. One witness said he heard at least one shot at about 9:30 or 10 p.m. and that within minutes police arrived, lights on their cruisers flashing. Lakeview Avenue was closed for a time, he said.

Cops fanning out through the neighbourhood shouted at people gathered on the sidewalk to get into their homes and turn off lights and TVs, another witness said. Residents said police were on scene until about 3 a.m. before resuming their search of the area Tuesday morning.
