KANDAHAR – The body of Cpl. James Hayward Arnal, the 88th Canadian solder to die in Afghanistan, was lifted onto a military plane during a ramp ceremony Sunday evening for the journey home.

He will be repatriated on Tuesday at about 2 p.m., in Trenton. His remains will then travel the Highway of Heroes, where residents in Durham Region and Northumberland County pay their respects from highway overpasses. The motorcade is expected to go through Northumberland around 3 p.m., while it should reach Durham Region by 3:30 p.m.

Cpl. Arnal was struck by an explosion late Friday during a night patrol in Panjwaii district near Kandahar city.

Arnal, based out of CFB Shilo, Man., was the 88th Canadian soldier killed in the Afghan mission, and the first in two weeks.
